Llon Penhall Rees

Llon Penhall Rees, now here is an interesting character.

I first came across this in an old, handmade autograph book and had the hardest time finding out just who he was. How many people have stamps made of themselves? He must be a noteworthy person, right?

Where I went wrong was assuming the second "l" was an "i."

Once the name was figured out, the search was on. (This was a year or so ago) Since then I have learned more about him.

He wrote a poem for her (yes, I know her):

So, he was a Reverend and Doctor (of some type). He was into yoga and he wrote poetry. This was also signed before she was married.

He said something that has made its rounds as a popular quote among dog lovers. You can find it here.

"Gratitude: that quality which the Canine Mongrel seldom lacks; which the Human Mongrel seldom possesses!"

Lion P.S. Rees

I found that through someone else who was trying to find out who he was here.

He wrote a few letters in fiction magazines which are listed here.

According to the police (yes…police) he once belonged to The Mystic Brotherhood University which was located in Florida and ran from 1929 – 1945.

But what is this "First Church of Illuminati?" I have tried to find out more, to no avail. I know who Fred is though.

No worries, the charges were dropped and the were sent free.

Now I had to look up what The Mystic Brotherhood was all about. Thank goodness someone else had done that for me. Running Out of Space had (at the time) written 3 posts about it. Since then he wrote 2 more. They can be found here,

So, it is a branch off a Rosicrucian Order ( AMORC ). What a sleuth the person of that blog is! This post was very interesting and gives us a clue into what became of it and why.

Here are a few articles that include Rees speaking out against Capital Punishment:

A book called “Race on Trial” (from google) had this in the index:

The information below was found here:

The Anti-Capital Punishment Association of Canada holds meetings in the interest of the movement to abolish this blot on civilization and those wishing to join the association may do so on payment of the fee of a dollar a year. Llon Penhall Rees, Mus. Bach., is secretary-treasurer, at 531 Markham Street, Toronto, 4.

He was also mentioned in another book called Feminized Justice: The Toronto Women’s Court 1913-1934 (from google):

So he was a music teacher too. He played the organ according to this.

I just don't see this happening in newspapers today. Have to admit, I smiled a bit after reading it.

Well, I will finish this up in another post. I think this one is long enough.
